How to Choose The Right Pressure Washer

Cleaning an industrial facility with a pressure washer

In the world of pressure washers, it can be hard to find the right equipment for your specific needs. A pressure washer is a piece of equipment that uses high-pressure water to remove dirt, grime, stains, etc. You can use pressure washers on decking, siding, flooring, essentially anything that is okay to get water on/needs a good clean. When picking the right pressure washer for your needs, there are a few factors to consider:

Pressure Washer Selection Considerations

What am I going to be cleaning?

First, consider what you are going to be cleaning. Different materials & stains will require different amounts of PSI/water pressure to clean effectively. For surfaces that are higher-traffic areas or hard-packed, you will want a higher PSI (pounds per square inch).

A higher PSI will give more cleaning pressure, allowing for a deeper clean of the surface. For a lower traffic area or something that is more loose packed, you would want a higher GPM (gallons per minute). A higher GPM will give you more water, allowing the looser-packed stains to be removed with ease – without spraying everywhere.

Should I be using hot or cold water?

Secondly, consider what temperature of water you should be using. Again, this goes back to what you are cleaning. If you are cleaning something that is loosely packed/there is a lot of it, use cold water. Cold water should be used in those high volume (high GPM) /low pressure (Low PSI) scenarios to knock away debris. On the flip side, hot water should be used for something that is deeper packed.

Hot water should be used in those lower volume (low GPM), and high pressure (high PSI) scenarios where you need to get rid of the packed-in dirt/grime. High pressure is what will allow you to get down to the root of the stain and remove it with ease. Hot water is also ALWAYS recommended when it comes to cleaning grease/oil.

What fuel type should I choose?

The final consideration is what fuel type you should choose. Are you looking for something that is gasoline-powered? Or maybe something electric? The biggest factor in this decision is whether you need your machine to be portable or not. If you need your machine to be portable, a gasoline-powered pressure washer may be the best fit, it will be the easiest to move around making it the most efficient solution.

On the flip side, electric pressure washers are convenient for indoor use where there is access to electrical plugs. They are much quieter than conventional gasoline-powered machines and they are easy to set up/use at a moment’s notice.  Regardless of fuel type, the general performance (PSI and GPM) will remain the same.
